The river Danube is a unique ecosystem with a high biodiversity, an important water reservoir and an international waterway with high potential for inland navigation and is as such being promoted by the EU’s transport policy (NAIADES).

Inland navigation is an environmental-friendly mode of transport, however, given the increasing transport volumes in the Danube Corridor the need is arising to develop concepts for handling possible negative side-effects.

Thus, in this perspective, the project WANDA (WAste management for inland Navigation on the DAnube) aims at establishing a sustainable, environmentally sound and transnationally coordinated approach in ship waste management along the Danube.
