In connection with increasing requirements for the transport of goods and people in expanding zone of free market in the EU there is an increase of importance of inland navigation in transport system.

With regard to environment and mainly water protection it is necessary to consider waste production including waste water related to this kind of transport and to build the system of waste handling.

Following the analysis of the conditions determining the process of waste generation and handling related to inland water transport (mainly to drainage water) this work is focused on creation of coordinated conceptual approach to this process on the Danube River not only with regard to inland water navigation development but mainly from the viewpoint of environment protection with the emphasis on water protection and water quality. It considers the requirements of national legislative and administrative framework and logistics of inland water navigation and waste management and it is directed to the identification of existing limitations of this solution, proposal of measures and international cooperation and harmonization of this procedure for all Danube countries.
